Aluminium Welding TIG

What is TIG Aluminium Welding and what are the advantages and disadvantages?

There are various methods for welding aluminium parts together, and one of them is TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) aluminium welding. In TIG aluminium welding, the torch contains a non-melting tungsten electrode combined with an inert gas to create the welding arc between the tungsten electrode and the workpiece. An inert gas like Argon or Helium flows around the electrode, protecting the weld pool and the electrode from external influences.
The weld in TIG aluminium welding can involve fusing two products together (e.g., sheet parts). Especially with thin sheets, no additional material is added. If filler material needs to be supplied, the welder manually adds the welding wire.

Due to the precise process, TIG aluminium welding requires a high skill level from the welder, and the speed of TIG aluminium welding is lower than, for example, MIG welding. However, TIG aluminium welding can achieve very high quality results. TIG welding is commonly used for highly alloyed steel (stainless steel) and aluminium and is particularly suitable for thin to very thin sheet metal, pipes, and structural steel.

Advantages of TIG Aluminium Welding

  • The welding process is highly controlled.
  • It is suitable for a wide range of materials.
  • TIG aluminium welding produces a very clean end result, without weld spatters or slag formation.
  • Provides good protection against oxidation during and immediately after welding.
  • Delivers high-quality and visually superior weld joints.

Disadvantages of TIG Aluminium Welding

  • Using filler material requires high skill from the welder.
  • Backing gas may be necessary when welding root passes.
  • More expensive welding gases are needed for TIG aluminium welding (such as Argon or even more expensive Helium).

In summary, welding aluminium with TIG requires experience and patience. It is also more expensive than MIG welding, but the results are of very high quality. If you want to weld aluminium using TIG, we have the knowledge and experience to make your product strong and of high quality.

Frequently asked questions

  • Can aluminium components be welded?

It takes a number of things to weld correctly, such as the right welding equipment, gas, a trained professional and a clean room. Are all these in place? Then aluminium is one of the most laborious steels available. Take note; have it done by a professional! Welding aluminium is not harmless.

  • Why aluminum welding?

Aluminium welding is often used when it comes to metalworking. The material aluminium is therefore very suitable for all kinds of applications. Among other things, it is used in machines, furniture and various types of building products. Aluminium is therefore lightweight and very strong. Moreover, aluminium does not rust, which makes it an attractive material to work with. During welding, we use special welding equipment to achieve the best results.

  • Welding aluminum: what are the advantages?

Aluminum welding comes with various advantages. What is the added value of aluminum welding by our company?

    – Every welding task is carried out safely and expertly by a professional.
    – In consultation with you as the client, we decide which welding technique to use.
    – We have all the necessary knowledge of aluminum and the related processing techniques in-house.
Aluminum welding is a widely used metalworking method. During welding, we use special welding equipment to achieve the best results.
We have a short delivery time, ensuring that your order is always delivered quickly.

When joining or combining aluminum, we employ different welding techniques. TIG welding is particularly suitable for very precise welding work. This can be done with or without filler material, and you are always assured of a beautiful finish. MIG welding is another processing technique characterized by high welding speed. Furthermore, the heat input is less than in TIG welding, resulting in less distortion. For each project, we assess which welding technique is most suitable for joining aluminum.
